Digital skills

The publications deal mainly with training in digital skills and AI literacy, how these relate to performance and resilience, and the lag in healthcare.

The conclusions and topics were compiled with AI from the publications on this page, with the sources alongside. How that works · How we count

What the publications show

  1. Several studies link training in digital skills to better outcomes. Społeczna Akademia Nauk finds in European data lower job satisfaction among those who need training and do not get it; IPAG Business School links reskilling to better performance.

  2. Two studies find that digital skills on their own say little. The University of Macedonia sees the most resilience among employees who combine digital skills with adaptability and eagerness to learn; the University of Ottawa points to the way the technology is introduced.

  3. One European survey of 932 workers by the University of Macedonia links rapid technological change to digital skills becoming outdated and to worries about people’s own employability. In this study, that worry also goes together with greater willingness to retrain.

  4. Since 2 February 2025, the AI Act has required organisations to take measures on AI literacy, without prescribing a level or certificate. TU Darmstadt and RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau describe how generic basic training does little to match what a given job demands.

  5. In healthcare, training lags behind use. Nivel, the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research, reports that more than half of nurses and care workers use AI, often without training, and in a Hellenic Open University study 7.2 per cent of Greek nurses say they have had sufficient AI training.

AI literacy and the obligation under the AI Act

  • AI literacy
  • AI Act
  • Enforcement

Since 2 February 2025, Article 4 of the AI Act has required organisations that use AI to take measures for their people's AI literacy; since 2 August 2026 national supervisors can enforce it. The law prescribes no level or certificate, but it does require demonstrable steps.

AI use, training and AI policy among healthcare professionals

  • Healthcare
  • Training
  • AI policy

More than half of nurses, carers and support workers use AI, mostly on their own initiative and without training. Hospitals are adopting AI policies at speed, but half of healthcare professionals see no clear policy and two thirds feel insufficiently prepared.

The technician shortage in manufacturing and AI in onboarding

  • Knowledge on the factory floor
  • Shortage of technicians
  • Onboarding with AI

Demand for technicians in manufacturing is growing faster than demand for production staff, and in the Netherlands machine fitters are very scarce. Deloitte sees AI as a way to build knowledge into the work, so that new people can work independently sooner. One in five AI applications has been scaled widely.
