AI agents

The publications deal mainly with how quickly organisations are deploying AI agents, who governs them, what agents deliver and how employees work alongside them.

The conclusions and topics were compiled with AI from the publications on this page, with the sources alongside. How that works · How we count

What the publications show

  1. Agents are quickly being absorbed into work. Université de Bordeaux estimates that on 21 February 2026 between 22.20 and 28.66 per cent of 128,018 GitHub projects studied used coding agents, and Capgemini and Microsoft describe agents increasingly carrying out real steps in the work.

  2. Deployment is running ahead of governance. Capgemini sees heavy use of agents and little mature governance in the car industry, and chief data officers in University of Manchester research name a steering committee and a fixed owner for each model as the first preconditions.

  3. Sources are cautious about the returns. McKinsey reports that gains at the level of the individual employee are still barely translating into business results, and BCG sees the value mainly at companies that manage their agents as one coherent programme.

  4. Articles from WHU and Royal Holloway treat implementation as ongoing steering: how much autonomy an agent gets, and how direction from the top relates to employees’ own experiments. These are conceptual models without measurements of their own.

  5. Little has been measured about the employee working next to the agent. A conceptual model from SUNY Oneonta ties collaboration to role clarity and the perceived threat to one’s own competence; The Pragmatic Engineer sees engineers spending more time directing agents.

Agent-washing and the cost and value of agent projects

  • Agent-washing
  • Value of agent projects
  • Managing agents

The number of AI agents is growing fast, but Gartner expects over four in ten agent projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027 because of rising costs and unclear value. Vendors, meanwhile, are sticking the agent label on existing products. The value goes to companies that manage agents as a single programme.

Structure

Who is the agent's boss? Ownership, mandate and control of AI agents

  • Governance of AI agents
  • Mandate and ownership
  • Agent autonomy

In more and more organisations AI agents carry out real steps in the work and will gain more autonomy in the coming years, while almost nobody has set up the governance: who owns the agent, what it may do without a check, who switches it off. That is a structural question for line management, not an IT question.

Leadership

Engineering managers writing code and engineers directing AI agents

  • Engineering managers
  • Hands-on management
  • Coding agents

Technical managers in the software industry are once again writing and reviewing code themselves. LeadDev sees the share of engineering managers doing more hands-on work rise from 20 to 35 per cent in a year, and engineers spend more time directing AI agents.

AI in software development and the trouble with measuring productivity

  • AI in software development
  • Developer productivity
  • Coding agents

The share of developers willing to leave application logic to AI rose from 18 to 50 per cent in a year. Measuring the return no longer works: METR cannot find enough developers still willing to work without AI, and 66 per cent feel metrics miss their contribution.
