What the publications show
Two studies of US listed companies find that boards facing disappointing results look beyond the figures. The University of Groningen sees extraverted CEOs leaving sooner in that situation, and Texas A&M University sees the same when a rival company’s CEO has won an award.

A Santa Clara University study of CEO changes at S&P 1500 companies finds that strategic change increases the likelihood of a new CEO being dismissed early. Clear language and an optimistic message reduce that likelihood. This rests on a single publication.
Together, the three studies describe boards that lean on simplified cues under uncertainty, such as personality, awards for competitors and stakeholder reactions. Groningen finds the effect stronger in complex industries and among boards whose members have shorter tenure.
