Job satisfaction and vitality

Most of the publications look at what fuels happiness and energy at work, how these relate to performance, and programmes designed to increase happiness at work, many of them in healthcare.

The conclusions and topics were compiled with AI from the publications on this page, with the sources alongside. How that works · How we count

What the publications show

  1. Several studies identify social relationships as a key source of happiness at work. In warehouse work, bonds with colleagues were the most consistent protective factor, and a meta-analysis by VU Amsterdam finds happiness and health spilling over from partners, managers and colleagues.

Høyskolen Kristiania, 2026 (opens in a new window) · Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2026 (opens in a new window) · University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 2025 (opens in a new window)

  2. Diary studies find that employees partly manage their own energy over the course of the day. Physical activity and short social breaks go together with more energy, and a positive mood precedes this kind of energy management.

Leipzig University, 2026 (opens in a new window) · West University of Timişoara, 2026 (opens in a new window) · University of Ljubljana, 2026 (opens in a new window)

  3. Several studies find a positive link between happiness at work and performance. In the hotel sector, internal corporate social responsibility and happiness at work go together with the wish to stay, and in higher education with better performance through pride in the brand.

Poznań University of Technology, 2026 (opens in a new window) · CETYS Universidad, 2026 (opens in a new window) · University of Aveiro, 2026 (opens in a new window)

  4. On one point the studies contradict each other. Among insurance salespeople, job satisfaction went together with lower sales performance, and among Spanish researchers greater scientific impact went together with less happiness, while other studies link happiness to better performance.

University of Aveiro, 2026 (opens in a new window) · Universitat Politècnica de València, 2026 (opens in a new window) · Poznań University of Technology, 2026 (opens in a new window)

  5. Programmes to increase happiness at work show small effects. An app-based programme in an Amsterdam hospital slightly improved wellbeing, mainly in a select group, and self-designed activities at a pharmaceutical company modestly raised scores that were already high.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 2026 (opens in a new window) · Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2026 (opens in a new window)
