The publications deal mainly with burnout symptoms among Dutch employees, workload in education, and work-life balance in an always-on culture.

The conclusions and topics were compiled with AI from the publications on this page, with the sources alongside. How that works · How we count

What the publications show

  1. Dutch monitoring surveys by TNO, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and RIVM, the Dutch public health institute, report that the share of employees with burnout symptoms rose to 21 per cent in 2025, against 13 per cent in 2015. Employees aged 25 to 34 (28 per cent) and women (23.5 per cent) report the most symptoms.

  2. TNO and TALIS 2024 map workload in education separately. According to TALIS, half of Dutch school leaders experience a lot of work stress, almost twice as often in secondary education as in 2018, and more than six in ten teachers want a period of calm before any further innovation.

  3. One review of 36 studies (University of Rijeka) names resources at work as the most researched explanation for engagement in an always-on culture. Psychological detachment from work and the right to disconnect are rarely measured separately.

  4. Among more than 2,400 Spanish researchers (Universitat Politècnica de València), greater scientific impact goes together with less happiness, through a poorer work-life balance. This rests on a single study in a single profession.

Change fatigue and policy overload in Dutch education

  • Change fatigue
  • Policy overload
  • Teachers

Over six in ten Dutch teachers want a period of calm before the next round of innovation, more than in most other TALIS countries. ROA and the Inspectorate blame an accumulation of rules and temporary schemes, which leaves schools unable to implement new plans properly.
