Mandate and ownership

The publications focus mainly on who is responsible when AI agents act on their own, how much authority organisations give agents and what new roles are emerging as a result.

The conclusions and topics were compiled with AI from the publications on this page, with the sources alongside. How that works · How we count

What the publications show

  1. Two academic articles argue that an agent has influence without being able to bear responsibility. Kozminski University calls the agent a participant outside the moral order; Paris Nanterre links governance requirements to the degree of delegated autonomy.

  2. UniNettuno sees most organisations as ready to give agents bounded, reversible tasks under supervision, but not yet to delegate broad authority in high-risk work. Paris Nanterre divides that authority into three levels.

  3. New roles are emerging to oversee agents. According to Capgemini, banks and insurers are planning positions to monitor the AI, and Harvard Business Review argues for a dedicated agent manager role.

Structure

Who is the agent's boss? Ownership, mandate and control of AI agents

  • Governance of AI agents
  • Mandate and ownership
  • Agent autonomy

In more and more organisations AI agents carry out real steps in the work and will gain more autonomy in the coming years, while almost nobody has set up the governance: who owns the agent, what it may do without a check, who switches it off. That is a structural question for line management, not an IT question.
